About the Artist

Carollyne Yardley, Focus Magazine, Feb 2013 issue. Photo by Tony Bounsall.

Carollyne Yardley coined the term Squirrealism to describe her signature style of fine artwork and commercial media and merchandising using squirrel faces in paintings, photographs, and digital art to create strange, transgene characters and creatures, living in wonderful worlds.

Through the meticulous and minute brushwork of fine portraiture, Carollyne’s work incorporates allegory and surrealism to explore psychological truths and complexities about the human condition. Even without a human face, her paintings maintain the essence of a portrait, immediately conveying humour and personality — followed by budding uncertainty about the characters and the secrets they keep.

She cites an eclectic range of influences that inspire her work including Dali, Otto Dix, James Ensor, Mark Ryden, Olaf Breuning, Rande Cook, Noah Becker, Yayoi Kusama, Cecil Beaton, Pop Surrealism, Boucher, Fragonard, and Ingres, but also Samuel Beckett, and Elaine from Seinfeld.

Raised in Victoria, British Columbia, Carollyne Yardley completed two years in the Visual Arts Department, Faculty of Fine Arts, and is a graduate of the University of Victoria, where she completed a Double Major in Psychology and History in Art. Most recently, she has taken art classes at the Victoria College of Art and studied with Tony Ryder at The Ryder Studio School in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

She established a strong foundation in the technology industry as the founder, co-owner and creative director (1997-2010) of Star Global Advanced IT Corp. a software application and web development company that delivered visual communications and custom web-based software to over 700 clients throughout North America.  This experience left her with an enduring interest in the repetition of imagery, brand development, and popular culture.

Carollyne left the business of technology behind in 2010 to focus exclusively on the business of painting and art, free to express her true self, standing with her hands on her hips, yelling and laughing at the squirrels in her yard.

She lives in Canada with her husband.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a storyteller at heart, and my work is based on imaginary, characters, misfits and alienation. Or perhaps, an alien nation.  I am currently exploring character development through humour, portraiture, pop culture, and absurdity.  The squirrel face is a metaphor* for the secrets we keep.

Professionally, I spent 14 years in the technology industry, helping businesses enhance their brand through visual engagement, web-based software solutions, and customer interaction. We tend to identify people or businesses based on their brand, or outward appearance. As a result, I’m interested in observing first impressions based on visual cues.

Our heuristic reasoning is powered by pattern recognition and association. When applied to social interaction, this makes us natural stereotypers. By replacing the human face with a squirrel face / mask, the viewer is forced to contemplate the personality of the entity within, and is manipulated into classifying the characters based on arbitrary features such as clothing and hairstyles. For instance, people will speculate they think one of my characters is a boy or a girl, regardless of clothing or hairstyle accoutrements. It is these responses, that are of most interest to me.

The repetition of the squirrel face is used as a stylistic device to produce a cognitive dissonance.

*The term Secret Squirrel takes it’s cue from a Hanna Barbera cartoon show that was a parody of the spy genre; one of the characters was a squirrel.
