What is giclée?

The Definition: Giclée (zhee-klay) - The French word "giclée" is a feminine noun that means a spray or a spurt of liquid.

The Quality: The quality of the giclée print rivals traditional silver-halide and gelatin printing processes and is commonly found in museums, art galleries, and photographic galleries.

The Market: Numerous examples of giclée prints can be found in New York City at the Metropolitan Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Chelsea Galleries. Recent auctions of giclée prints have fetched $10,800 for Annie Leibovitz, $9,600 for Chuck Close, and $22,800 for Wolfgang Tillmans (April 23/24 2004, Photographs, New York, Phillips de Pury & Company.)

When offered for sale - a hand-signed reproduction is only available when purchased directly through the Carollyne.com web site. The reason for this is because Carollyne Yardley personally packages and ships your item to you along with a certificate of authenticity.

How is my Giclée produced?

Critical Colour Scanning
The original artwork is first scanned professionally at a local print shop called The Imaging Group, Victoria, BC. This involves scanning the original, colour correction and proofing. Carollyne Yardley always chooses "Critical Colour" to maintain the nuances of color and tone of the original. It is then printed locally in Victoria, British Columbia.

What is Museum Wrap?

Museum Wrap
Sometimes called, "Standard Wrap" - a normal method for small to mid size prints. The canvas is stretched and secured by staples on the sides of the print. Canvas stretches so a slight amount of print "bleed" may wrap over the sides.

What is Gallery Wrap?

Gallery Wrap
The gallery wrap option stretches the image around the entire width of the stretcher bars, making a portion of the image viewable from the sides. For gallery wrap canvases, we use 1'' thick wood support bars, the edges are painted either black or white or a colour compliment of the piece.

What materials are used for my Giclée?

UV Coated Canvas
Carollyne Yardley has tested out several different materials, and prints on UV Coated Canvas. Optima MXE coated canvas is extremely durable. This canvas features a unique water resistant emulsion that is much more durable than typical paper based products.

Why print on canvas?
Printing on canvas is a great way to get a ready to hang work of art that is an affordable alternative to an original. For example, you can get your image printed on canvas and you can choose to have it stretched over stretcher bars or just rolled in a tube and sent to you to frame yourself.

UltrachromeTM Inks
This ink-system offers an excellent colour range similar to dye inks, and improved archival performance. Life-span ratings vary from 100-150 years when used on UV coated canvas.

How do I care for my Giclée Print?

Giclée prints should be treated as you would an original work of art to maximize their life span. Avoid touching the surface of your print. Oils and contaminates on your skin will shorten the life of your print. Be careful of exposure to high humidity, chemicals, or direct sunlight.

Framing and Stretching Canvas?

All prints are produced with a generous amount of white border. This border may or may not have to be trimmed at the time of framing. It is perfectly acceptable to do this. How you choose to frame your art is up to you. The originals are created on standard stretched canvas with Museum Wrapping. Carollyne Yardley suggests that if you bought the giclée on Canvas ONLY for you to have the canvas stretched in the same format (Museum Wrapping). It's up to you if you want to frame it or not!

Quality and Authenticity

When purchased at Carollyne.com each print is individually inspected and hand signed by the artist for colour accuracy and print quality. Carollyne Yardley signs the back of the canvas with the date of signature for authenticity, plus includes a certificate of authenticity.
