Carollyne Yardley with Adam Noonan at the Massey Gallery, AGGV, Victoria, BC

Carollyne Yardley, Artist in residence at the Massey Gallery, AGGV, August 4th, 2012

It was a nice afternoon at the Massey Gallery, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, acting as the Artist in Residence alongside Adam Noonan for the Integrate Arts Festival and Summer Small Works Exhibition and Sale.

It was cool enough inside the temperature controlled environment to enjoy painting, while outside the day sizzled on the hottest day of the year in Victoria 2012.

I decided to wear black to celebrate my dedication to winter months, as did Renee Crawford, Art Rental and Sales Consultant for the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. We were like a team.

Adam Noonan on the other hand, was appropriately dressed in light summer casuals. Would we expect anything less from this fine gentleman?

It was a treat to see Adam work, while I puttered away yakking and painting. I learned Adam does his underpainting in sepia tones, I thought that was pretty cool, and it obviously lends itself well to the warmth emanating from his paintings.

I thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon, and thanks to Renee for inviting me to participate!

David Wahl from Archie McPhee’s supplies squirrel toys leads to new paintings with real squirrel mask?!

Today, in the mail, arrived a real squirrel mask, courtesy of the fabulous David Wahl, the Director of Awesome for Archie McPhee’s, the world’s weirdest store located in Seattle, WA. A longer version of how we connected and how he collected three of my squirrel paintings here, but let me tell you, we clearly share the same sense of HA HA.

Wearing squirrel mask, but deciding not to keep my back to the squirrels for too long, since it is mating season :-)

Wearing squirrel mask, but decided not to keep my back to the squirrels for too long, since it is mating season.

This was the very mask I had coveted ever since reading the article by Rusty Blazenhoff, Managing editor at the Laughing Squid, (Twitter @laughingsquid) titled, Secret Society Plans Civilized Brunches in Unusual Circumstances, a great story out of Alameda, California with folks wearing formal Brunch-y wear and donning squirrel masks.

As many of you know, the squirrel face in my paintings is a metaphor for a mask or a disguise, whether it be the character of a person, qualities of personality, or matters that are hidden or generally concealed.

How fabulous is it I now have one – inspiration for the new paintings!!!!! Woot!

David also sent me Squirrel Underpants, Squirrel Coffee Mug (smallest in the world), and – get ready for it - Big Head Squirrel Feeder shaped like a squirrel head. This of course is going to provide us with endless hours of entertainment as you’re meant to fill it with something squirrels like to eat and when they stick their head up there, the squirrel looks like he has a hilariously huge head with a goofy smile.

Cameras Ready!

THANK YOU DAVID WAHL! XO
