“A PASSION for PRINT”
A celebration of printmaking by Judith Welbourn, Lorraine Thorarinson Betts and Thekla Albrecht-Iribarne. The three Victoria artists share a passion for fine art on paper. The show features the mediums of screenprinting, lithography, intaglio, woodblock, and mixed media monotypes.

Our trip to Maui in February was much less jam packed with adventure than usual. My vacation itineraries usually role out like a minute by minute logistical report with marching bands and scheduled time for rest. But this trip saw lots of swimming, snorkeling, and reading. Wash, rinse, repeat. We did, however, manage to see several small galleries and world class artwork that I thought were worth mentioning.
Lahaina, Maui
During our stay we visited a quaint, New England whaling town called Lahaina. It was once the capital of the Hawaiian kingdom and the seat of power for the Kamehameha dynasty in the early nineteenth century. By the mid-1800s, Lahaina was soon overwhelmed with as many as 400 ships at a time berthed in the harbour, spilling up to 1,500 sailors ashore. Lahaina went on to become a bustling, whaling village.
Today, the town features storefronts that are occupied by clothing shops, art galleries, and Ono Gelato - the best damn gelato store on planet earth (with a connection to former Victoria BC residents of La Collina bakeries).

Artwork by Alan Wolton caught our eye. This picture is from the artist’s website, but I think it is the exact painting we saw and fell in love with while we were there.

At Sargents Fine Art, we met Island Impressionist, Roman Czerwinski, and he took the time to show us his work, and describe his inspirations. In July 2009, Roman was honored by his native country of Poland by having his art chosen to be on permanent display in the Polish Consulates in Los Angeles, Chicago and the Embassy in Washington DC.

Surreal imagery, photography montage. You’ve got to see it to believe it. Thomas works with a combination of printing; sandwiching negatives together, plus a whole lot more photography brilliance to create a fantasy world from real photographs.

James Coleman was onsite painting his latest piece at the Diamond Head Gallery. He used to work for Disney, and now is well known for “Romantic Impressions”. He captivated his audience for over two days while this painting took shape.

We happened upon this lovely art gallery and discovered it’s operated by Owner and artist Belinda Leigh. She was on location the night we dropped in, and she gave us a tour or her artwork. She’s self taught and has been painting for over 34 years. Wonderful woman! And the way she captures light for her under the sea paintings is heavenly.

See Under the Sea”
Belinda Leigh has illustrated this unique children’s book, “See Under the Sea.” Written by Ellie Crowe, it traces the adventures of a little humuhumunukunukuapua’a fish as he plays with the other beautiful creatures of the coral reef. The images are on transparent overlays so every page is a surprise, with many layers and discoveries to be made.

Maui Art & Gifts also has artwork by many other artists including Todd White, one of the creators of Sponge Bob Square Pants.

My favourite artist during this trip was Robert Deyber, A Painter in Pursuit of Serious Fun, which is not really a surprise since I lean toward the pop art surrealism genre.
Here’s a new original that was for sale when we were there:

And last but not least, I publish here the, “Vacation Photo of Maui 2010″. We usually develop a theme during our excursions. For example, one year the theme was, Nermal the Turtle. And we called everything and everyone, “Nermal”. This year the theme was, A Rooster and His Beetches, said with Spanish accent. I submit a photo below that explains it all. This flock seemed to be everywhere.
