Lady & Squirrel painting – in progress

I started three paintings yesterday. A wacky chicken, a space creature, and the next painting for the Lady & Squirrel series posted below (my third painting after Ingres). Also, I still have the Bagpiper Squirrel and Elvis Squirrel in progress. It feels good to get the ideas out on canvas, and I plan to rotate through them so I don’t get bored by painting one painting at a time. (12)

Palm Springs Art Museum, Golf, Living Desert, and Aviation

We visited Palm Springs, California, over the Christmas holidays. The Palm Springs Art Museum lived up to it’s reputation as a small sized, world-class museum.

They have a mixture of longtime residents of Palm Springs whom are better known as actors than as artists, like George Montgomery Letz (1916-2000) (married to Dinah Shore), Navajo textile art, Hopi, Mexican, Latin American, American, British, Japanese, and pop art surrealists like Andy Warhol.

Here are some highlights:

Fernando Botero Columbian, born 1932 Ultimo Retrato de los Arnolfini (after Van Eyck) 1956 oil on canvas

Fernando Botero’s words really inspired me to continue my journey using the influence of Ingres and Raphael:

- from the signage next to his painting:
“If I paint a painting that has the same subject as a famous (historical) painter has used, I am part of the same tradition. I am saying that I am equal to the artist who first painted that painting.”

Botero’s origins as a Latin American have had a profound effect on his development as an artist. The above quote seems to challenge anyone who would marginalize him or his work as “colonial”, an attitude he fiercely objected to during his time in Europe (1952-1955).

GOLF

We were surrounded by golf courses during our stay, here’s a neat shot of the orange trees. Needless to say, we got our vitamin C during this holiday.

THE LIVING DESERT

We also visited the Living Desert, whose mission is desert conservation through preservation, education, and appreciation. Here’s my favorite shot of two of the camels. They were playing around more than anything else, but this game of “bite my ass” went on for at least 10 minutes. Too funny.

AVIATION

And last but not least, we visited the Palm Springs Air Museum. Some of the Docents there are WWII vets, and everyone else is a pilot. Amazing stories, great artwork on the walls and on the airplanes too.
