Mermaid Squirrel: Standing On Her Own Two Feet

I have to wait for this painting to dry before I confirm whether it is complete or not, but I’d say it’s pretty close. This is the first painting I have completed in oil (outside of the class I took down in Santa Fe). There was a learning curve in terms of the colour consistency, and the transparency of different paints with medium, but I think I’ve got the initial hang of it. Naturally, the next one will be easier. So here she is – the last painting of 2010 called Mermaid Squirrel: Standing on Her Own Two Feet.

The subject matter is reflective of both my return to swimming for exercise, being inspired by Efren Quiroz’s collection of mermaids, and my change of business focus. For the last 13 years as the owner of Star Global Advanced IT Corp. Ltd., I’ve had a business partner (Graham Nott).  Now operating as Carollyne Yardley Omnimedia, I go alone, and stand on my own two feet. I’m very excited at what the future has in store for me. Happy New Year to all. Here are two previous posts about this painting (post 1, post 2)

Mermaid Squirrel in progress, and Saint Squirrel Art Cards!

Hi all,

Mermaid Squirrel: Standing on Her Own Two Feet is still on the easel and in progress. I’ve got the colour scheme sorted out. I look forward to the day when I have it all mapped out ahead of time, but for now, I truly enjoy painting round the canvas 70 times changing all the colour as I go. Here’s a link to what she looked likes in the first photo.

I have also noticed that I need the most perfect conditions in order to paint. That is, after having eaten, bathroomed, and re-hydrated, I then need the proper clothing (not too loose, not too tight), and the material needs to be bullet proof to protect against the colour red. As it turns out, and probably because I’m all afraid of cadmium red (insert toxic warning label), it gloms onto me like the plague. Lean over paint palette – yup, only the colour red jumps out and soils my top. Got the plastic gloves on- pff – red can penetrate anything!

Anyhow, I am now back on the painting road with a couple of new product items. I posted a request at Facebook for recommendations regarding non-toxic mediums and cleaning stuff, and Kirsten Wright, owner of the Regalia Boutique was kind enough to provide good suggestions, including mediums by M. Graham. Keith Hiscock also gave me some great advice, so a quick thank you to him too.

I also went to ArtWorld on Chatham Street in Victoria, BC, and discovered a great soy based, non-toxic brush cleaner, and it is food grade quality to boot! I think it’s called Dave’s – but they give you some in a take away jar, so you could probably bring in your own jar for filling too.

Also news today, I had 100 art cards printed of Saint Squirrel: Protecting You ‘Cause You’re Nuts, and am selling them in batches of 10. I sold them all this morning! If you’d like a package of 10 (with envelopes) let me know by my contact form, I’m getting more created next week. Also, if you know of a card shop that might be interested, message me about that too. They are 5″ X 7″, white envelope, blank inside, and cost $20 plus $5 to ship if needed.

THE FINAL WORD

Thank you to everyone who came out to support my new life as a visual artist, and to those who supported me in spirit. It was a fabulous evening.

A huge thank you to the folks who bought a piece of my artwork. I know you will take good care of the “ladies and other creatures”.

Over 100 partygoers arrived at the Black Olive Restaurant (Penelope’s Cafe) to enjoy whisky, wine, and hor d’oeuvres. It was a sunny late afternoon event, without a raindrop in sight.

The paintings were hung by the chimney with care – erp – ok, ok, it’s not a Christmas story – but it sure felt like it by the end of the night! I sold six out of ten paintings along with one giclee reproduction. Together with the Black Olive Restaurant, we also raised $427.60 for the Garth Homer Society ARTWORKS FUND

ARTWORK SOLD

LadyBlue and LittleSquirrel Too (Giclee) – SOLD
The art collectors took home their artwork that night. There are still four originals paintings available, and I’ve added four giclee reproductions to the room.
I’ll be adding more items throughout November. Plus, the show has just been extended through to December 2010. I’ll be producing a small catalogue of giclee reproductions for special orders (ask at the counter in a couple of weeks, or watch for an email update). This is in case your favourite item is not hanging up at the restaurant. I’ll also be producing some art cards for sale. Both the giclee reproductions and the art cards will make great holiday gift ideas.

Saint Squirrel: Protecting You ‘Cause You’re Nuts was in attendance at the Big Eyed Ladies show. He wasn’t for sale, but was coveted by many. I will keep you posted on the paintings that will be available for sale at the Secret Squirrels Show. Mermaid Squirrel: Standing On Her Own Two Feet is currently on the easel, and she’s going to be a real cutie-pie.

Mermaid Squirrel: Standing On Her Own Two Feet – in progress

Inspired by swimming my ass off in the pool, while contemplating life and doing the breaststroke, along with Efren Quiroz’s (from Exhibit V) mermaid collection (fantastic bronze statue), I present my next painting in progress for the Secret Squirrel Show – Mermaid Squirrel: Standing On Her Own Two Feet. This also marks my use of oil paints. Real oil paints, not water based oils. I started the painting in acrylic, and was like – hey, what are you waiting for Carollyne? So I hauled out my oil paints that I bought for Santa Fe art school, and all the accoutrements. And I liked it. Oil paint is much easier than acrylic so far, drying time is forever. Love the blending factor. Left foot (first layer) done in oil paint.  (2)

Invite Update: Garth Homer Society and the Big Eyed Ladies Show, Victoria, BC

invite_blog_carollyne_art_show21

Thanks to everyone who has already RSVP’d! It’s shaping up to be a lovely evening.

Artshow Update:

Carollyne Yardley Omnimedia and The Black Olive are working together to give 10% of the proceeds on items sold on Opening Night to The Garth Homer Society ArtWorks Fund.

On October 05th, I was invited by my good friend Elizabeth (Pederson’s Party Rentals), to attend The Garth Homer Society Board of Directors Donor Appreciation preview of The BIG Picture, an exhibit of large works by ArtWorks artists.23267_308291768615_5750_n

I was most impressed with the artwork I saw, the artists in residence, and ArtWorks Program Coordinator, Bonnie Laird and Suzanne Bessette’s achievements in creating this unique visual arts program. I decided I wanted to help them raise part of their $10,000 annual goal to support the cost of paint, tools, frames, guest artists, and studio maintenance. I have pledged $100 to the ARTWORKS FUND, and hope to raise more on Wednesday, Nov 03rd, 2010. I will be presenting a cheque to Bonnie and Suzanne of the Garth Homer Society that evening.

LadyBlue and LittleSquirrel Too – Pop Surrealism

I finally finished this one up (since last post),  and called it, LadyBlue and LittleSquirrel Too.

Now onto two Squirrel paintings. I’m prepping to work in oil paints and supplies from my painting vacation experience in Santa Fe at the Tony Ryder Studio in July. Wish me luck, I’ll have to be much more neat and tidy. With acrylics, I can easily wash off my face, fingers and pants. I just heard someone laugh at the “neat and tidy” part. Insert stink eye.

Dreaming of the Three Little Pigs – Pop Surrealism

I just finished Dreaming of the Three Pigs (see earlier version back in May 09), and will finish off LadyBlue and Babe later today. And then – it’s full steam ahead with the Secret Squirrels!
