Um, I love studio tours!

Noah Becker Studio (Visual Artist, Critic, Jazz Musician)

Today, I travelled with a few art collectors and art lovers (including Alexander Kaiser of Silly Hats Only)  to Noah Becker’s studio.

While Noah’s team of  contributing writers, editors and photographers are busy over at Whitehot Magazine interviewing artists such as John Mellencamp and Julien Schnabel, Noah is busy painting new works.

Our group wanted to see these new artworks, and anything else he had available for show and sale. Luckily, we were able to see a few pieces that have shown at the Torrance Museum of Art, California, and the Vancouver Art Gallery, Canada. We also got to see Love in Black, as featured below in NY Arts Magazines latest issue of 30 artists to watch for  2012.

A couple of years ago I collected a Noah Becker painting titled, Plenty (Realm Series) , and now I had my eye on a pen drawing that was it’s precursor. I have now experienced the curse of knowing about a drawing that precedes the painting. How can you leave the pen drawing for someone else to collect, knowing you have the painting?!  Sacre bleu!

Needless to day,  as of today, this artistic collective (pen drawing and painting) have been reunited.

I love looking at the subtle differences the artist made between the original drawing and final painting. For instance, the top structure was originally a water wheel, and by the time it came to the painting stage, it turned into a water house. And my favorite feature ? There’s a little squirrel in both the drawing and painting 🙂

We spent almost 2 hours looking at selected works; pen drawings, paintings from a variety of series (Realm, Summer ) and Noah’s new portrait paintings, including Prince Philip IV with UPS “costume” titled, Courier. We got  a sneak preview of more to come from this latest series, and they look awesome (insert emoticon for karate kicks)!

I think the best part of the tour was listening to Noah talk about his concepts and how he plans out a drawing or painting. Our group had a collective a-ha moment during his explanation of dividing the layered worlds. And not surprisingly, the artwork on focus of the discussion was subsequently collected by a member of our group.

If you want to join in on the next studio tour – let me know. Use my contact form, or connect with Noah directly if you see a painting at his website that you’d like to see up close!
